JADE ROGGE - VITICULTURIST
Born to an Australian Mother and New Zealand Father and raised on a deer and cattle farm on the East Coast of New Zealand meant working outdoors always felt natural to Jade Rogge.
From the age of 14 during school holidays, Jade worked in the family business developing vineyards doing everything from hand raking, pruning, training young vines, harvesting fruit, and even sitting on the back of the tractor planting grapes. Jade always felt a strong connection to the land and loved working the busy vintage season back then just as much as she still does today.
After completing high school in 1997, Jade began the journey to mould her experience and passion into a career and commenced tertiary studies in Viticulture and Oenology.
In 1999, she was granted the Fruitfed Viticulture Scholarship to contribute towards her education. A year later, Jade moved to Australia to complete the remainder of her studies at Charles Sturt University and graduated at the end of 2001.
Jade then went on to work in Victoria’s Yarra Valley before receiving a job offer back home and returning to New Zealand. Until 2009, Jade worked in Technical Viticulture before moving into a Viticulture Management role for Delegats Wine Estate in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
In 2009, she moved to the Marlborough wine region, resuming a position with Delgats before taking up a role as Regional Viticulture Manager the next year for Treasury Wine Estates (TWE). During her time at TWE, Jade progressed to National Viticulture Manager before deciding to relocate to Australia in 2018.
With her young family of four daughters in tow, Jade joined the rest of her family on Australian soil.
At the end of 2019, Jade joined Peter Lehmann Wines as Viticulturist, and now manages the 100+ longstanding grape growing community that produce grapes for the winery across the length and breadth of the Barossa Valley. Working alongside the winemakers, she plays an integral role in ensuring the high quality of Peter Lehmann Wines vintage after vintage.
When not on the land, Jade is passionate about travel and was a keen snow skier. However, in recent years, she has traded that in for warmer climates, extensively travelling through Europe and Asia, as well as sailing on her parent’s yacht while they lived in Asia. Every year Jade tries to take time to explore a new country or indulge in a new experience.
JADE ROGGE 5 MINUTES WITH.....
My role is a combination of the best of both worlds. As Viticulturist for Peter Lehmann Wines my primary focus is to liaise with our large portfolio of growers to enable them to deliver the best quality and varietal mix of fruit that is required for our wines. I also get to sit with the winemaking team and be involved with the finished wines before they go to market.
I have always had a natural love of growing and producing crops as well as being outdoors, so with viticulture I can do all that in my day- to-day job.
The change that every year brings. No single season is ever the same.
I would have to say the weather along with the ability to adapt to each season, depending on what it delivers.
Great communication and people skills. When you’re working across a diverse group of people you need to be able to build strong relationships with them all.
Oh, there are several! However, if I had to choose just one it would be Masters Eight Songs Shiraz.
Champagne with a charcuterie platter - simple perfection.
Travelling, I want to experience as much of the world and other cultures as I can. Life is fleeting so I believe we should enjoy it as best we can, while we can.
Q. What would people be surprised to know about you?
I have my own bee hives.
