In the beginning we made just one Shiraz, the grape variety that has defined the Barossa as one of the world's great wine regions. But we knew Shiraz that came from some vineyards was better than others - smaller, deeper in colour and more intensely flavoured - 'Little Black Jewels' we called them. For over 30 years, Stonewell has been lauded as one of Australia's greatest wines and one of the world's greatest Shiraz.
WINEMAKERS NOTES
The 2019 vintage in the Barossa was defined by adversity, with frost, hail and exceptionally dry conditions dramatically reducing yields across the region. Yet from these challenging conditions came fruit of remarkable concentration and intensity. Small berries and loose bunches produced wines with deep colour, powerful structure and exceptional flavour, a true reflection of the resilience of the Barossa and the vineyards that produce Stonewell Shiraz.
Crafted from carefully selected parcels of premium Barossa Shiraz, the wine was fermented gently before maturing for 15 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Following bottling, the wine rested in temperature-controlled cellars for a further five years prior to release, allowing the layers of complexity and structure to evolve beautifully.
Deep crimson in colour with a youthful purple hue, the 2019 Stonewell Shiraz opens with lifted blackberry, boysenberry and dark plum fruit layered with notes of cedarwood, licorice and smoky oak. Rich and full-bodied, the palate is plush and concentrated with an inky texture, spiced fruitcake characters and long, firm tannins that carry impressive depth and persistence. Powerful yet refined, this is a classic Stonewell release and will cellar comfortably for the next 15-25 years.
