All about Barossa Shiraz: Celebrating the regions most iconic varietal on Shiraz Day

15th July 2021 | Written by PeterLehmannWines

Shiraz Day was first celebrated in Australia last year. Commemorated on the fourth Friday of July, this year’s celebrations fall on Friday 23rd July.

There’s no wine region quite like the Barossa Valley. World renowned wine critic and writer, Jancis Robinson once described the Barossa Valley as ‘Australia’s quintessential wine region’. And at 170 years old, it is home to the oldest Shiraz vines in the world.

Spanning 40 kilometres, it has 17 different sub-regions and the Barossa floor accommodates 8 different soil types. This brings rich diversity, meaning that winemakers and wine drinkers alike can experience a variety of Barossa Shiraz styles.

This quintessential Barossa varietal has a reputation for rich, plush, full bodied wines. At Peter Lehmann our winemakers are focused on creating full flavoured Barossa Shiraz wines preserving the integrity of the fruit and the vineyard terroir. Working with growers across the region, our winemakers can access grapes from across the diverse sub-regions meaning they can craft different styles of Shiraz wines from richly textured, fruit driven full bodied styles to intense, refined and elegant.

THE Barossan Shiraz

A big bold red, THE Barossan Shiraz is carefully produced to be an archetype of the Barossa region. The grapes are sourced from selected parcels of premium Barossa Shiraz sourced from subregions across the valley floor. The combination of grapes from different regions creates a full bodied Shiraz, with a palate rich in red fruits and chocolate characters. It presents aromas of fresh berries and charred spice notes, complemented by its deep red colour. This is a real favourite of our Barossa wines.

Portrait Shiraz

Portrait Shiraz, cleverly crafted to create a ‘portrait’ of the Barossa through its intentional replication of the very first style of Shiraz made by our founder Peter Lehmann. Using only the best fruit from 60 growers situated in the Barossa, this blend has a soft finish, abundant in red fruits and chocolate. It holds a deep red colour with a black centre and hints notes of liquorice charry spice. This is one of the most commonly loved from our visitors at our Barossa cellar door.

Hill & Valley Shiraz

Hill and Valley Shiraz embodies the perfect combination of grapes sourced from the Adelaide Hills, all the way down to the Eden Valley. The ancient soils provide a perfect base for Shiraz that exhibits its origin through a full bodied, silky palate with purple fruits and a moreish finish. .

Futures Shiraz

Futures Shiraz is crafted from a small number of vineyards in Northern and Western Barossa that produce low yielding, but highly concentrated fruit. A typically firm, rich palate, the intense fruit flavours are perfectly integrated, making for a supple wine.

Stonewell Shiraz

In the beginning we made just one Shiraz, the grape variety that has defined the Barossa as one of the world’s great wine regions. But we knew Shiraz that came from some vineyards was better than others – smaller, deeper in colour and more intensely flavoured. For over 20 years, Stonewell has been lauded as one of Australia’s greatest wines and one of the world’s greatest Shiraz.

2015 Masterson Shiraz (magnum)

Masterson Shiraz is truly a one of a kind and only released in exceptional years. The finish is long with fine persistent tannin.
