Wigan strikes again in London

Peter Lehmann Wines’ Wigan Riesling has firmed its position as Australia’s best Riesling by winning the trophy for Best Australian Riesling over £10 at the Decanter World Wine Awards, announced today.

Peter Lehmann Wines has now achieved the hat-trick with the 2006 vintage of Wigan Riesling, winning this trophy for the third consecutive year.

This year’s Decanter World Wine Awards was the largest in the competition’s nine-year history, and Chief Winemaker Andrew Wigan is in London to celebrate the win.

“The feedback we are getting for Australian Riesling as a category grows every year I visit the UK,” Wigan said. “If our wine can fly the flag internationally for Australian Riesling, that is a great result for the industry as a whole.”

In addition to the Decanter trophy, Lehmann’s flagship Riesling has won Best Riesling at the International Wine and Spirit Competition five times since 1991.

Locally, Peter Lehmann’s 2006 Wigan has collected five trophies to date; the 2009 Barossa Wine Show, the 2010 Sydney Royal Wine Show and the 2010 and 2011 Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

The Wigan Riesling is bottled in the year of making, then cellared and released with five years bottle age. The 2006 vintage is a single vineyard wine from the Southern end of Eden Valley.
