Operations

All Peter Lehmann Wines winemaking operations are carried out on a single site located near Tanunda, in the heart of the internationally famous Barossa Valley, South Australia.

South Australia receives most of its rainfall in winter and the vines take the moisture into their root system before the new shoots appear. Generally, the flowers appear in November, the berries begin to develop and bunches of fruit ripen, ready for harvesting in February, March and April.

It is now that the winery really swings into action as the grapes are crushed, fermented and clarified.

Vintage is an exciting time as this is when the winemakers make all the important decisions.

Maturation periods vary depending on the grape variety and wine style required. Peter Lehmann Wines has stainless steel tank storage facilities as well as French and American oak barrels which enhance the flavour and character of the wines.

Perhaps the most important decision is when the wines will be ready for release. Once the decision has been taken, the wines are packaged for despatch to the various markets. Bottling is undertaken by a nearby contract bottler.

Food safety issues are critical to the reputation of Peter Lehmann Wines and, indeed, the Barossa Valley. Peter Lehmann Wines has implemented a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan to address food safety issues.

As well as making wine for sale, Peter Lehmann Wines also crushes fruit for other wineries.
