Enjoy Responsibly
Peter Lehmann Wines is committed to promoting the responsible enjoyment of wine.
Research suggests that regular, moderate consumption of wine as part of healthy diet and lifestyle can be beneficial to health. However, the abuse of alcohol can lead to serious health and social problems. As with any alcoholic beverage, wine requires a sensible approach to its consumption. People choosing to drink must be aware of the effects of alcohol and consider the impacts and health and social well-being.
The amount of alcohol present in wine can vary considerably. To assist you in keeping track of how much alcohol you are consuming, the number of standard drinks contained in the bottle is provided on the back label. A standard drink represents 10g of alcohol and can be calculated for any alcoholic beverage
by using the following formula:
Standard Drinks = Volume of Container (Litres) x % Alcohol by Volume x 0.789
Where 0.789 is a constant and represents the specific gravity of ethyl alcohol
For example, a 750mL bottle of Shiraz containing 14.5% alcohol equates to 8.6 standard drinks:
8.6 = 0.75 x 14.5% x 0.789
A standard 150mL glass of the same Shiraz would contain 1.7 standard drinks:
1.7 = 0.15 x 14.5% x 0.789
The Australian Alcohol Guidelines issued by the Department of Health and Ageing recommend that men should consume no more than 4 standard drinks a day on average and never more than 6 standard drinks in one day. Women should consume no more than 2 standard drinks a day on average and never more than 4 standard drinks in one day. It is important to understand that alcohol can affect people in different ways, and therefore there is no amount of alcohol that can be said to be safe for everyone.
